Approximability results for stable marriage problems with ties

چکیده
We consider instances of the classical stable marriage problem in which persons may include ties in their preference lists. We show that, in such a setting, strong lower bounds hold for the approximability of each of the problems of finding an egalitarian, minimum regret and sex-equal stable matching. We also consider stable marriage instances in which persons may express unacceptable partners in addition to ties. In this setting, we prove that there are constants δ, δ′ such that each of the problems of approximating a maximum and minimum cardinality stable matching within factors of δ, δ′ (respectively) is NP-hard, under strong restrictions. We also give an approximation algorithm for both problems that has a performance guarantee expressible in terms of the number of lists with ties. This significantly improves on the best-known previous performance guarantee, for the case that the ties are sparse. Our results have applications to largescale centralised matching schemes.

Approximation algorithms for hard variants of the stable marriage and hospitals/residents problems
When ties and incomplete preference lists are permitted in the Stable Marriage and Hospitals/Residents problems, stable matchings can have different sizes. The problem of finding a maximum cardinality stable matching in this context is known to be NP-hard, even under very severe restrictions on the number, size and position of ties. In this paper, we describe polynomial-time 5/3-approximation a...
متن کاملOn Treewidth and Stable Marriage
Stable Marriage is a fundamental problem to both computer science and economics. Four well-known NP-hard optimization versions of this problem are the Sex-Equal Stable Marriage (SESM), Balanced Stable Marriage (BSM), max-Stable Marriage with Ties (max-SMT) and min-Stable Marriage with Ties (min-SMT) problems. In this paper, we analyze these problems from the viewpoint of Parameterized Complexit...
متن کاملLocal Search for Stable Marriage Problems with Ties and Incomplete Lists
The stable marriage problem has a wide variety of practical applications, ranging from matching resident doctors to hospitals, to matching students to schools, or more generally to any two-sided market. We consider a useful variation of the stable marriage problem, where the men and women express their preferences using a preference list with ties over a subset of the members of the other sex. ...

In 1976, Knuth [14] asked if the stable marriage problem (SMP) can be generalized to marriages consisting of 3 genders. In 1988, Alkan [1] showed that the natural generalization of SMP to 3 genders (3GSM) need not admit a stable marriage. Three years later, Ng and Hirschberg [16] proved that it is NP-complete to determine if given preferences admit a stable marriage. They further prove an analo...
متن کاملWeak Stable Matchings with Tenants and Ties
The paper addresses a variant of the stable marriage problem that models a job recruitment problem in which applicants are strictly ordered by priority but their preference lists may have ties. Some applicants may hold a post initially. These posts may be assigned to other applicants if their holders get another post. By reducing the problem to a sequence of maximum cardinality bipartite matchi...
